Sufi Poems

Here I am

All night, a man called "Allah" Until his lips were bleeding.

Then the Devil said, "Hey! Mr Gullible! How come you've been

calling all night and never once heard Allah say, "Here, I am"?

You call out so earnestly and, in reply, what? I'll tell you what. "Nothing!"

The man suddenly felt empty and abandoned.

Depressed, he threw himself on the ground and fell into a deep sleep.

In a dream, he met Abraham, who asked, "Why are you regretting praising Allah?"

The man said, " I called and called But Allah never replied, "Here I am."

Abraham explained, "Allah has said,
"your calling my name is My reply.

Your longing for Me is my message to you.

All your attempts to reach Me are in reality my attempts to reach you.

Your fear and love are a noose to catch Me

In the silence surrounding every call of "Allah"

Waits a thousand replies of "Here I am."

Burning Candle

I am a burning candle;

You are the morning light,

If i do not see You, i burn;

if I see You, I vanish.

This is my condition

in separation and closeness.

I can bear neither separation nor proximity.

-sufi poem

The Prophet said that God has declared,

"I am not contained in aught above or below,

I am not contained in earth or sky, or even

In highest heaven. Know this for a surety, O beloved!

Yet am I contained in the believer's heart!

If ye seek me, search in such hearts.

- Jalaluddin Rumi

O lord!

If I worship You from fear of Hell, Cast me into Hell.

If I worship You from desire for Paradise, deny me Paradise.

but if i worship You for your own sake

then withhold not from me your Eternal Beauty

The real work is in the heart:

" Wake up your Heart! because when the heart is completely awake,

Then it needs no friend "

O my Lord, whatever share of this world You have bestowed on me,

bestow it to my enemies, and whatever share of the next world you have for me ,

give it to my friends. You are enough for me.

"True devotion is for itself: not to desire heaven nor to fear hell."

-Rabia al-Adawiya

So long as we do not die to ourselves,

and so long as we identify with someone or something,

we shall never be free.

The spiritual way is not for those

wrapped up in exterior life.

Your remedy is within you,

But you do not sense it,

Your illness is from you,

But you do not perceive it.

You presume you are an insignificant entity,

But within you is enfolded

The entire universe.

Thus, you have no need to look beyond yourself

What you seek is within you,

If only you reflect!
