In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

"Ala inna awliya 'Allahi la khawfun aalayhim
waa la hum yahzanoona"

"Lo! verily the friends of Allah!
no fear comes upon them, nor shall they grieve."

(Quran-10:62) Chapter Yunus

The Beloved Friends of Allah Subhanahu wa-ta'ala

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"There is a group of the slaves of Allah that even the Prophets and martyrs
will envy "

Then someone said:

"Who are these people perhaps we can love them." and Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam said:

"They are a people who love each other through the light of Allah, not through wealth or family ties. Their faces are filled with nur (light) and they are on pulpits of light, neither do they fear when the people fear nor do they grieve when the people grieve."

" Verily Allah has said, the one who hurts my waliy I have declared war against him. And there is nothing better for the salve as a means of coming closer to me than performing the compulsory deeds."

"And the slave never ceases to grow closer to me by Nawafil until I love him."

"And when I love him I am his hearing that he hears by and the sight that he sees by and his hand that grips with and his legs that he walks on. If he asks Me I will give and if he seeks My refuge I will give him refuge."

"Since their hearts are near to the Lord of Truth (Almighty and Glorious is He), they listen to no one but Him and they see no one but Allah(swt)."

The Holy Prophet ( sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) has stated:

" There are certain of Allah's servants that have been set aside to fulfil the necessities of the people. People will call to them in their times of need. They are protected from the punishment of Almighty Allah."

"I am with the thought of my slave, if he remembers Me by himself I remember him by Myself, and if he remembers Me in a group I remember him in group better ( than his) and if he comes close to Me the length of a hand I draw close to him the length of a fore-arm, and if he draws close to me the length of a fore-arm I draw near to him the length of an arm and if he comes to me walking I come to him like a wind, I am with him if he remembers Me."

" Allah is the waliy of those who believe, bringing them out from the darkness into the light." Q (2:257)

The word Wali (plural Awliya) is an Arabic word meaning Friend or Wali meaning Muslim Saint.

"Wilayat (Sainthood) is a very special rank and position of acceptance given by Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) to His beloved servants. Some attain this position due to their sincere devotion and worship. Some attain this position from birth, but ultimately, it depends on Allah's mercy and kindness."

On the authority of Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be well pleased with him, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

"Allah Almighty has created three hundred people, whose hearts are like that of Adam, and He created forty people whose hearts are like Moses. He also created seven people whose hearts are like that of Abraham, and he created five people with a heart like that of Gabriel, and three people with a heart like that of Mika'il and only one person with a heart like that of Rafa'il (Raphael). When such a person dies, Allah Almighty will replace him with one of the three. When one of such three dies, Allah Almighty will replace him with one of the five. When one of the seven dies, Allah Almighty will replace him with one of the forty, and when one of the forty dies, He will replace him with one of the three hundred and when one of the three hundred elite dies, Allah Almighty will replace him with someone He chooses from among the pious masses. Such a person will live among the people, and through his prayers (dua), by Allah Almighty's permission, life and death, rain and prosperity will come and calamity will be averted."

Abu Nu`aym quotes this saying:

"The servants whom God loves best are the pious and the hidden. When they are away no one misses them, and when they are present they are ignored. They are the imams of good guidance and the torches of knowledge." Suyuti, al-Fahr al-kabir, refers it to Abu Nu`aym's Hilyat-ul awliyĆ¢.

"When Allah Almighty loves a person so, he calls Jabrail (alaihi as-salaam) and says that '' O Jabrail I love my so and so servant, and you also love him. Hence Jabrail (alaihis salaam) also loves him. Then Jabrail (alaihis salaam) announces in the skies that Allah Ta'ala loves his servant than all of the dwellers of skies love him. Then he is made beloved amongst the dwellers of the earth".

(A supernatural act, or miracle, performed by a Wali, is known as karaamat.)

Karaamat of The Awliya in The Quran

Allah Taala says in the Holy Quran :

Sulaiman said; "O chiefs , which is of you who may bring her throne to me before they come to me submiting?" One big evil Jinn said; "I will bring you that throne before you rise from your sitting and undoubtedly I am powerful over that and trustworthy."

One who had knowledge of the book said;"I shall bring it to you before the twinkling of an eye." Then when Sulaiman saw the throne set before him he said; "This is of the grace of my Lord that he try me whether I am grateful or ungrateful. And whosoever is grateful is for his own good. And whosoever is ungrateful, then my lord is self sufficient, All Virtuous." {An Naml:38 - 40}

In this verse Allah Taala has mentioned the karaamat of the companion of Sulaiman (Alaihi Salaam). His name was Asif Bin Barkhia. Commentators say this throne was huge and was at a distance of 1500 miles, but the Awliya Allah brought it near before the twinkling of an eye.

Allah Almighty mentions the story of Maryam (Radi Allahu ta'ala anha) and says,
"And shake towards yourself holding the trunk of the palm tree fresh with rip dates will fall upon you". (Sura Al-Maryam, Verse 25). According to the commentators this was a dry tree, no fruit was on it but when the Waliyah of Allah, Maryam (Radi Allahu Ta'ala anha) shaked it the dates fell down. It was her Karaamat that the dates fell from the dry tree.

Allah Almighty mentions another karamat of Maryam (Radi Allahu ta'ala anha). He says, " Whenever Zakariya (alaihis salaam) went to her place of prayer he found new provisions with her. He said,"O Mary! Whence did this come this to you? She spoke, that it is from Allah, 'No doubt Allah gives whomsoever what He pleases without measure. (Sura Al'-Imran, Verse 37).
